Yours, Mine and Ours
Much better than your typical Nickelodeon-made movie. Or maybe it's better than your typical Disney-made movie, and that's typical of Nickelodeon-made movies. I don't know, because I haven't seen a lot of preteen movies, but I thought that this one was good.
The remake of an old 1968 movie originally starring the likes of Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda, this movie is silly and fun enough for kids to enjoy, and does so without making all adults look like total morons thereby alienating them. The pace of this movie seems geared toward the total lack of attention span that's so common in younger moviegoers1 these days, but there's still enough substance that it's not a complete teeny-bopper waste of your time
I loved that the romance which brought these 18 kids together wasn't born out of a lot of blubbering and boobing, grew to fruition without dragging us through all the mush, and bore its troubled moments without all the blubbering and boobing that I was so excited about having dodged from the start. It was just a nice tidy part of the story, and never got overly annoying. I also liked that, although this movie was a little preachy, it did so without dumbing it down to the lowest levels of stupidity before slapping you in the face over and over again with it. There was also a pig and a sailboat in this movie!
Not Academy Award material, but not a stupid preteen movie either. It was a lot of fun without being annoying, dating itself too much by trying to be overly trendy, or portraying me as one of the stupidest creatures on the planet because I happen to be an adult these days.
high points: Summarized romance, painted pig, sisters from New Delhi.
low points: Putting my hands up in the air, and waving them like I just don't care.
1) And myself...
