Labyrinth

I watched this movie a bunch of times as a kid, but it's been so long since I last saw it that I decided to write a review on it anyway.

As is the case with almost everything Jim Henson ever did, this movie is full of imagination, creativity, a clever story, special effects well beyond the movie's budget, and some of the weirdest musical numbers in film history. It's a pretty simple story, but the characters Sarah meets along the way and the circumstances she finds herself in are weird and interesting enough that all you really need is simple plot that will take you from one thing to the next. It's easy to see how this movie was inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz, but it still has a personality all its own. Plus it's fun to hear puppets swear.

It gets a little creepy during the ballroom scene when Old David Bowie, age 39, tries to seduce 161 year old Jennifer Connelly. Still, the need for friendship is a very strong theme in this movie, as is the importance of love over than worldly possessions. It's a great movie for kids, and for those of us who were kids when it was first released, you'll love every weird minute of it.

1) Although her character is supposed to be 15, which is even worse.
