cape may

The wife and I went camping down the shore this weekend. We drove down to Cape May Friday evening, spent Saturday on the beach at Wildwood, and drove back on Sunday after church. Dave, Keri, and Marlon spent the weekend with us as well.

Friday night we had a campfire and grilled burgers, hot dogs, and s'mores. We didn't have any newspaper, so we had to rely on our Eagle Scout/Army training and shaved off little bits of kindling from some logs in order to get the fire going. Our campground was really more of a high-end trailer park where retired people keep a vacation getaway trailer, with a few places set aside for tents. Tons of people had golf carts, and some of them had been pimped out with custom paint jobs, lift kits, off-road tires, and custom leather seats.

Saturday was beach day. I'm not much of a beach lover, but there was a boardwalk nearby, and that always helps. Dave was excited about building a sand toilet, which didn't work out, so we settled for a sandcastle (which you can see to your right) instead. My contribution was the winding pathway carved into the mountain that leads to the castle. Dave and Keri did everything else. There was a youth sand-soccer tournament going on at the beach, and all of the participants and their families were living in this tent city out on one of the beaches. In the evening we ate some crappy Italian food, then watched Ocean's 13 at a "theater" that was really just a huge inflatable screen out on the beach. I thought it was appropriate that the two movies they were showing that night were Ocean's 13, and Rise of the Silver Surfer.
